Research project "EthaNa - ethanolic mild extraction of rapeseed"

(Duration: 09/2017 - 08/2021)

Target:

Construction of a pilot plant based on the novel process for the processing of rapeseed developed by B+B Engineering GmbH together with scientists from the Fraunhofer Center for Chemical-Biotechnological Processes (CBP).

EthaNa stands for ethanolic mild extraction of dehulled rapeseed, on which the process concept is based. It includes dehulling of the rapeseed, cell disruption of the rapeseed kernels, and fractional extraction with ethanol, and does not involve pressing of the seed. The process is carried out at a gentle temperature of 80°C maximum.  Direct extraction with alcohol yields high-quality vegetable oil and high-quality proteins as the main products. In addition, secondary ingredients such as sinapic acid, tocopherols, phytic acid or glucosinolates are obtained, which can be used for technical or cosmetic products.
